backstory:
Emerald is an earth pony born to two Pegasus parents. Because of her genetics, She could walk on cloud just fine, but of course could not fly. Her parents loved her dearly and kept her hidden from the leader of cloudsdale, who, they feared would banish her to earth. One day, emerald wandered out of her parents sight and fell off of a cloud. She was caught by none other than the leader himself and  was sent away to live on the ground. Her parents tried again and again to bring her back to cloudsdale, but it was strictly forbidden. She vowed to find a way to return home, but without wings, there was simply no way.

for about a year, emerald lived on the streets of the crystal empire, (where there were few unicorns, so technology was very important and advanced) she tinkered with spare parts she found, and made mechanical toys to sell. With the money, she bought food and the basics for life, but still had no home. 

One day, during a hard winter, she caught a deathly illness. Luckily, she was found by a young palace guard, who took her into his family to be nursed back to health. They accepted her as a little sister, and gave her a room in the palace. After a long time in their care, Emerald recovered, but her body was too frail for her to train as a palace guard. Instead, She became the palace mechanic and was given access to all of the parts and equipment she needed.
though she had a home and adopted family, she felt stifled among the palace walls  and crowded city, and never forgot her commitment to return to Cloudsdale. With a burning passion, she started inventing.

through many trials and errors, she was finally successful in creating a flying apperatus. She transcended the boundaries of being born without wings, and took to the sky, where her heart truly belonged. Equipped with her new device, she took on the nickname 'Vol' which means 'Flight'. 

Upon on returning to Cloudsdale, she had to prove her worth by winning a race against the graduates of flight camp. With her golden wings, she won the race and her place back with her parents. 

She often visits her adopted brother in the empire below, and forged an alliance between the Pegasi and the crystal ponies.
